WebJSTOR Home WebThe variola virus causes smallpox. There are two variants of variola: variola major and variola minor (or variola alastrim). Variola major caused most cases of smallpox and the most deaths. Variola minor caused similar, but less severe, symptoms. It was only fatal in 1% of cases, compared to over 30% of cases of variola major.
